Italy continues to delight and exasperate in equal measures. Without doubt Italy produces some of the world’s best wines but it also produces oceans of inferior wine, some of which is dull and others actually very badly made. It is probably the most difficult country to fully understand and buy. There are literally thousands of producers, which cover the whole gamut from the sublime to the ridiculous. The positive note is that the best producers, and they are rapidly increasing in numbers, are producing higher quality wines than ever. The other positive point is that good Italian wine really exhibits a sense of place, which in this day and age of identikit wines is a real breath of fresh air.
