Big boy from the Meditterranean with a soft and supple side
Spain has long been the world’s sleeping wine giant. There are finally signs that it has begun to rise from its long self imposed slumber. There are more and more exciting new wineries springing up and making exemplary modern Spanish wine. The natural resource of varied terroir, plenty of sunshine and an apparently endless supply of old vines is helping these modern wineries produce truly exciting wines at very reasonable prices. However not everything coming out of Spain is great, far from it. There are still many wineries resting on past reputation and many new ones from “hot” areas that might win high points from transatlantic wine critics but which in our opinion are far from pleasurable to drink and certainly do not have a place at the table. Having said that when you find a winery that is doing the right things Spain is pretty much unbeatable for “bangs for your buck” enjoyment at the moment.
